Coffee and Turntables Journey To Mars: a Visual Playlist (for NASA’s Perseverance Landing, 2021)

This is our little homage to NASA’s Perseverance rover, which successfully landed on Mars in February 2021. A remarkable feat for science, and another rather small step in proving that the Earth is not flat. (wink, wink).

With the widening of humankind’s horizons, one thing is certain: wherever we go, no matter how far, we’ll need some great music and coffee! So, we’re scouting for new Coffee and Turntables venues and Mars seem a promising gig, one day!

Meanwhile, we decided to celebrate the landing with a little “visual playlist” – songs that we pierced together around a theme, almost as to tell a little story, with the aid of visuals. We are pleased to give you… our journey to Mars!

Scientists send a satellite into space, and it makes a boy dream of visiting other planets. After all, space is the place. He wants to go to Mars. He grows up and gets out there, outa space… and finally reach Mars. But, he can’t leave it… he gets stuck in that planet.

1- The Tornados, ‘Telstar’

2- Sun Ra & His Arkestra, ‘Space Is The Place’

3- The Flaming Lips, ‘Take Meta Mars’

4- Billy Preston, ‘Outa Space’

5- Stereolab, ‘Prisoner of Mars’

Coffee and Turntables on BBC Radio Merseyside

One half of the Coffee and Turntables DJ duo, Peter Martin, was interviewed last Friday on the Jenny Lee Summers show on BBC Radio Merseyside. Check the clip we posted on Instagram below. Thanks to Jenny for having us on. 🙂

Bringing it all back home

This summer Coffee and Turntables is returning to where it all started, the streets of the Baltic Triangle. After a year on the move and recently completing residency number four, our Saturday afternoon events are coming back to the Baltic Roastery (brought to you by 92 Degrees Coffee) on Jamaica street where life began for us last year.

Each week throughout August we’ll be spinning all vinyl records to lively up your weekends, coaxing out the sun and dispersing your hangover clouds. There’ll be tasty food, delicious coffee, the usual great vibes and plenty of good times! If the weather plays its part, we’ll be on the street keeping the Baltic drifters entertained and putting smiles on faces.

Expect to hear soul, blues, funk, tropicalia, psychedelia, rock’n’roll, electronica and whatever else feels right in the moment.

As usual we’ll have some guest DJs (announced soon) to keep it interesting and the events are all family friendly so bring your kids. We might even do some of our patented Tots and Turntables kids DJ workshops if there is enough interest.

Last year we had a blast. We had a just married bride, firemen grooving in their fire engine, spontaneous dancing, Gay Pride revellers, people and pets, mums and dads, mods and bikers, old and young, stag and hen dos, quiet readers and chatty meet n greeters. A splendid time was had by all.

Come along, get involved, bring a friend or make some new ones.

DATES: Saturdays in August
3rd, 10th, 17th, 24th, 31st

Lupercalia podcast

Guest DJ Caitlyn (Kitchen Disco)

For Valentine’s day week we decided to do something different and went on a Lupercalia Crawl of the Baltic area of Liverpool. We had three venues a bunch of DJs and some live music.

Along the way we wrote aphorisms, made collages, ate bagels, drank and made merry, listened to Tristan’s bonkers itinerary for the sharaband trip to Switzerland and basked in the glory of Riggy’s amazing Nepal story.

A splendid time was had by all. You can see some pics below.

In case you missed it, we recorded much of it for Hefty Tomatoes, Peter’s podcast, and it is available for you to listen to on Old Rope’s Mixloud page. Fun tales and great all vinyl tracks.
