Coffee and Turntables is a series of cafe-based daytime parties brought to you by Ivan Thunders (Not Deaf Yet) and Peter (Old Rope) along with regular guest DJs. We do short seasonal residencies in cafes and eateries around Liverpool, usually on Saturday afternoons, with some special bonus evening events.
It started life as a weekly DJ party on Jamaica Street, in Liverpool’s trendy Baltic Triangle, during Summer 2018. We brought sunny vibes every Saturday afternoon for 11 weeks outside the then-new 92 Degrees pop-up cafe (now called The Baltic Roastery), hence the “Coffee” of our event’s name – the “Turntables” comes from the fact we only play vinyl.
You know the famous Liver Bird wings graffiti? It was near there. You know the mural of Jurgen Klopp? It was opposite that. We made that spot so cool they decided it was the only place for their street art. Maybe. The sun was pretty hot that year and it may have gone to our heads.
C&T on the move
The second residency was in the cosy and warm Lovelocks Coffee Shop across town in Old Haymarket (by the Queensway Tunnel), spinning records over November and December and capped with a special Christmas and Turntables edition.
The third residency was a a month in The Bagelry, a cracking cafe and even better bakery in Liverpool’s Chinatown. The fourth series was four events spanning two months and took place in Spire, a cafe, restaurant and event space which brought us back into the Baltic triangle.
For Coffee and Turntables 5 we returned home to The Baltic Roastery (part of 92 Degrees Coffee) on Jamaica street. There we brought great times to the coffee-suppers and passers by in the Baltic drift.
The sixth residency brought us out of the city centre for the first time, to the famous Penny Lane and Bean There Coffee Shop. A raft of guest DJs created nice vibes and a couple evolved into boozy after parties for people with kids having a safe ‘Saturday night out’. 🙂
In spring 2020 we headed back to historic Chinatown and began our second stint at the Bagelry, (aka Coffee and Turntables VII) leading to total bagel sell out on many an occasion. We also had our first ‘visiting’ DJ from Bristol.
Covid 19 and the global pandemic put paid to our plans for a season, but gave us all time to reflect, splurge cash on fresh tunes and plan for the socially distanced return of C&T.
Coffee and Turntables VIII is set to take place back in the Baltic, this time at the fabulous Coffee and Fandisha.
We have lots of other ideas in the pipeline and we’d love to see you at one of our events. They are usually child-friendly and great for families, hungover meet-ups or just anyone who wants to make some new friends.
Hope to see you soon! Ivan & Peter
